Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra captures amazing images of earth from “space”

In a groundbreaking feat of technology and innovation, Samsung has elevated smartphone photography to new heights by sending the Galaxy S24 Ultra into the stratosphere using balloons. This extraordinary endeavour has resulted in the capture of breathtaking images of Earth from space, showcasing the beauty and majesty of our planet from a unique perspective. To demonstrate the powerful camera capabilities of its latest flagship phone Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung recently took a rather creative step – sending four mobile phones into space to capture the magnificent scenery of the western United States.

The Mission

Samsung embarked on a mission like no other, strapping not just one but four Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones to a stratospheric balloon. This ambitious project aimed to push the boundaries of what is possible with smartphone cameras and to provide a glimpse of Earth from a vantage point few have experienced.

According to reports, Samsung used a special lightweight carbon fibre bracket to fix the mobile phone on a stratospheric balloon filled with hydrogen. The mobile phone is also mounted on a customized 3D gimbal and is controlled by the flight computer to take photos from different angles and directions. Samsung shared photos of the wide-angle, 1x, 3x, 5x and main cameras on its official X US handle.

The balloons were launched from four locations including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and the Sierra Nevada between January 25 and January 31. Samsung says it did this to “shoot a variety of landscapes and test the capabilities of the S24 Ultra.”

Finally, the four mobile phones rose to an altitude of 120,000 feet above the ground. Although it is not strictly speaking into space, its height is far higher than that of ordinary passenger planes. From this height, the camera can easily capture the curvature of the earth.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s cutting-edge camera technology proved its mettle as it snapped over 150 stunning photographs of Earth from space. These images offer a mesmerizing view of our planet, highlighting its diverse landscapes, vibrant colours, and intricate details with unparalleled clarity.

After taking the photos, the crew released the hydrogen and opened the parachute. This allowed the device to slowly descend back to the ground at a speed of 5 miles per hour. Samsung tracked the location of the device throughout the entire process and successfully recovered it.

The final photos taken are still very stunning. We have posted some of the images in this article.
