Instagram is testing a full-screen display of photos and videos in the feed

New experiments with Instagram‘s “home” feed will allow the app to become more like its competitor, TikTok. The company has begun experimenting with showing full-screen content in the home feed, where users will see vertical content immediately upon opening the app.

Testing is underway according to the head of the social network Adam Mosseri in a video posted on his Twitter page. According to him, “higher” photos and videos will begin to appear in the feed of some users.


“We are testing a new, immersive browsing experience in the main “home” search results. If you are participating in the test, check it out and let me know what you think about it; ”Mosseri said on his Twitter account.

Judging by the image of the smartphone in the video, in the new full-screen posts, comments, likes and other information are placed on top of the images, and not at the bottom, as usual. Although the Stories panel is not visible, Meta is saying that users can access stories from the top of the screen. Search, Reels, shopping, and the user’s own profile will still be available; thanks to the buttons at the bottom of the screen. Notifications, messages and other options will be located at the top of the screen.

Instagram innovations were expected as the company intends to seriously compete with TikTok and other similar services. The social network actively promotes short videos among content creators and users; allocating funds for cash awards to top Reels creators. However, cloning videos from TikTok is discouraged.

Also, at the end of April, Mosseri announced that the platform would change the ranking algorithm; in favor of “original” content. At the same time, the company is trying in every possible way; to lure the authors of original content from competitor sites; including developing special tools for easily creating videos in the Reels format.

In Russia, the time users spend on social networks has decreased. This is according to the study of the audience of social networks by Mediascope.

So, according to Mediascope statistics, the time spent using Instagram (banned in Russia, owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist in Russia) fell from 13 minutes in early February to 1 minute on April 11-15.

According to experts, the earlier blocking of Facebook did not have such an impact on the overall indicators of “staying” in social networks.

In general, in the third week of April, Russians spent an average of 57-58 minutes a day on social networks; while from February 24 to March 14 this figure was higher – from 66 to 72 minutes a day.
