Instagram CEO responds to Kim Kardashian & Kylie Jenner criticism

Instagram CEO, Adam Mosseri released a video via Twitter saying that Instagram is “overhauling” the application, tilting the centre of gravity to video, one of the changes is the full-screen display videos and photos. A day earlier, social media influencers including Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian called for Instagram to “stop TikToking”.

Mosseri said the leaning towards video is part of Instagram’s efforts to align with how people communicate and share content. People are sharing more videos on Instagram, and Instagram will continue to support photo content while following this trend. Users will also start seeing more recommended content, helping creators gain more new users and grow their fan base.


“We will continue our current attempts to do everything possible to put our friends’ content at the top. But we also need to keep up with the times, because the world is changing rapidly, and we need to keep up,” Mosseri said in the video.

Instagram had no further comment on Mosseri’s tweet. It’s unclear when Instagram will roll out the new version of the app to all users.

Kim Kardashian is dissatisfied with Instagram’s short video – “Stop imitating TikTok”

Kardashian family member and reality TV star Kylie Jenner is the most followed woman on the photo-sharing app Instagram. She retweeted a post on Monday criticizing Instagram’s redesign of the app, asking it to “stop trying to be TikTok.”

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has tweaked the design of Instagram and Facebook to make them more like TikTok, prioritizing short videos and using an algorithm to recommend content to users that they don’t already follow. Some users protested the change, saying they want to see posts they follow rather than random entertainment.

A user with the account @illumitati posted a post expressing dissatisfaction. “Let Instagram be Instagram again,” the user posted, “I just want to see cute pictures of my friends.”

Kylie Jenner then commented below: “Please, please.” Soon after, Jenner’s sister Kim Kardashian joined in, retweeting the post while writing: “Please, please. already.”

As Jenner has a significant influence on the social media platform, her views are closely watched. On Instagram, she has 360 million followers compared to Kardashian’s 326 million. In 2018, Jenner’s tweets criticizing Snapchat wiped $1.3 billion off the market value of its parent company Snap in a single day.

Meanwhile, members of the Kardashian-Jenner family also rely heavily on Instagram to sell items like makeup and clothing. Instagram’s algorithm tweaks could make it harder for those celebrities to stay on the radar as the company prioritizes new voices.
