By default, 3D buildings don't appear on Google Maps; you need to activate a layer in the app to enable them. These buildings are visible in 3D whether you're in a city or a smaller area. However, since their introduction, they haven't been visible during navigation.
Users Have Reported 3D Buildings Feature in Google Maps App
This seems to be changing. Some users have reported that the Google Maps app on Android and iOS is now showing 3D buildings during navigation. To see this feature, you need to enable the 3D view before starting navigation and zoom in a fair amount. The exact release date for this feature is unclear, but it seems to be a recent addition.
For an even smaller group of users, this 3D view also appears to be showing up on Google Maps while using Android Auto.
Gizchina News of the week
Although we have been able to see 3D buildings on phones, our testing hasn't shown the same feature on Android Auto. However, some users on Reddit have reported seeing 3D buildings in action on Google Maps via Android Auto. In this view, the buildings become transparent when they obstruct the route. It's important to note that this feature is currently in testing, but a few users observed it in action in mid-December. This week, another user has also noticed this new feature in action.
Do you Have 3D Buildings Feature Yet?
As it stands, we haven't tested the new feature yet even though some users have already experienced it. Users who have tested it have not shared further details, as to the region in which they are or the devices they may be using. As a reader, you may have to update your Google Maps app on your device and check if you have it. Don't forget to share your region and device model in the comment section if the feature is currently available to you.
