Bad News: Google Tensor G3 Will Be Weak Against Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

With the launch of the Google Pixel 7a, we will be heading straight towards the debut of the Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro. However, there’s a high chance that we will get an official preview of the Google Tensor G3 SoC at the upcoming Google I/O 2023 keynote.

But it’s not like that would be the first time we will get details about the Tensor G3. We had an early leak regarding the SoC back in March. Though, that shared very few details. Well, there’s some good news for those waiting for more details about the upcoming Google Pixel SoC. Or should I say there’s some bad news?

Google Tensor G3 Might Not be Based on Exynos 2300

So, as per the leak from a reputable tipster, Google Tensor G3 will not be a strong competitor against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. According to the leaked info, the CPU will come with a total of nine cores. And when it comes to the specifications, the SoC will feature a ‘1 + 4 + 4’ cluster.

In that config of the Google Tensor G3, there will be a single Cortex X3 core at 3.3 GHz and four Cortex A715 cores running at 2.60 GHz. The rest four are Cortex A510 which will run at 2.60 GHz. This configuration might seem familiar to you if you read our coverage on a seemingly leaked config of Exynos 2300.

If you did not, that report claimed the Google Tensor G3 will be based on Exynos 2300. However, a recent report shows that the G3 will feature Mali GPU cores from ARM. If it were actually based on the Exynos 2300, we would have seen a custom-made GPU made in collaboration with AMD. So, the upcoming Google Tensor G3 might not be entirely based on the Exynos 2300.

Google Will Mass Produce G3 On a Less Efficient Samsung 4nm Process

The tipster also shared info regarding the manufacturing process. According to Revegnus, Google is likely to shave off some manufacturing costs. It will do that by utilizing the Samsung 4LPP process instead of the 4LPP+ tech. In comparison, 4LPP+ is reported to be a much better process, which Samsung will utilize for the upcoming Exynos 2400.

As you can guess, the 4LPP process would lead to lower power-efficiency metrics compared to the Exynos 2400. And that would eventually mean that the Google Tensor G3 will not have what it takes to go against Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Fortunately, Revegnus notes that the SF4 does not nominally lose against the TSMC N4. If you are wondering, the latter has been used to mass-produce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Google Tensor Chipset

Considering that, it would be safe to assume that Google will put up a fight against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with the Tensor G3. However, by the time Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are out, manufacturers will be prepping for Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. And that chipset is reported to be mass-produced on a much refined 4nm TSMC node.

Moreover, the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is likely to pack a Cortex X4 super core with a very impressive config. If the latest rumor of the Google Tensor G3 is true, it will have no chance against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. But Google never designs its in-house chipsets to deliver top-class performance anyway.

Still, we would love to see Google change its plans with the Tensor G3 and make it go against the upcoming high-performance chipsets. That would make the Pixel 8 series go head-to-head against the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 and other Snapdragon high-end Android smartphones.
